How to Pick a Salad Dressing

In a perfect world, we would all make our own salad dressing, where we control the quality of all the ingredients being used. But life is busy, and we need healthy go-to options! With all the options in the grocery store, it can be overwhelming. So what should you choose?


Things to Look For:


  • Healthy Oils: Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Avocado Oil

    • These are high in monounsaturated fat, which is extremely heart healthy!

  • No added sugar

  • Less than 200 mg sodium per serving

  • No preservatives

Things to Avoid:

  • Omega-6 Oils

- These include soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oils

- They trigger inflammation in the body

  • Added Sugar

- High fructose corn syrup and any word ending in -ose (dextrose, fructose, sucrose, etc) are all forms of sugar

  • High sodium content

  • Preservatives and artificial ingredients

- Common ones: Calcium Disodium EDTA, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Polysorbate 60, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate
